Ohme Home Pro EV Charger Installation – Moulsham Lodge, Chelmsford, Essex
Professional EV Charger Installation in Chelmsford
This project involved the installation of an Ohme Home Pro smart EV charger at a property in Moulsham Lodge, Chelmsford, Essex. The customer had recently purchased a new electric vehicle and wanted a safe, reliable home charging solution ready before their new car was delivered. They also wanted to take advantage of Octopus Energy’s cheaper overnight EV charging tariffs, helping to reduce the cost of charging at home.
Following an assessment of the property’s existing electrical installation, a dedicated EV charging circuit was designed and installed in accordance with the latest UK Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) and the manufacturer’s installation requirements.
The Installation
A new dedicated EV consumer unit was installed alongside the existing electrical equipment to provide a safe, independent supply for the charger. Due to the limited space available within the existing meter cupboard, careful planning was required to accommodate both the new consumer unit and the Henley blocks while maintaining a tidy, accessible installation.
The EV consumer unit was fitted with a dedicated RCBO to protect the charging circuit, along with a Type 2 Surge Protection Device (SPD) to provide protection against transient overvoltages.
During the installation, the original cable route was revised to achieve a neater finish. As the entire cable run remained inside the property, approximately 6–8 metres of 6mm twin and earth cable was used between the EV consumer unit and the charger location. A separate Cat5 data cable was installed alongside the circuit to connect the load management CT clamp to the charger.

Smart Load Management
To enable the charger’s smart load balancing functionality, a CT clamp was installed on the incoming supply before the Henley blocks. This allows the charger to continuously monitor the property’s electrical demand and automatically adjust its charging output if required, helping to prevent the property’s maximum supply capacity from being exceeded while allowing the customer to charge safely.
Attention to Detail
Rather than mounting a junction box externally, the charger’s factory-fitted tails were passed through the wall into the property and terminated within an internally mounted Wiska junction box. This approach provided a much cleaner external appearance by eliminating the need for a visible junction box on the outside wall, while still providing a secure, accessible, and weather-protected connection point.
Despite the restricted working space within the existing meter cupboard, the installation was completed with a strong focus on achieving a neat, professional finish throughout.

The Ohme Home Pro charger was installed on the front of the property, mounted to the side of the garage, providing a practical and convenient charging location for the customer’s driveway.
Following installation, the charger was fully inspected, tested, commissioned, and configured, ensuring it was ready for the customer’s new electric vehicle and fully prepared to take advantage of smart charging schedules and lower overnight electricity tariffs.
