Consumer Unit Upgrade – Chelmsford, Essex
Consumer Unit Upgrade in Great Baddow, Chelmsford
This project involved the replacement of an ageing consumer unit at a property in Chelmsford, Essex. The customer wanted to modernise the property’s electrical installation by upgrading to a new consumer unit offering improved circuit protection, better organisation, and greater capacity for future electrical work.
The existing MK consumer unit had served the property for many years but had become heavily congested following numerous additions and alterations over time. The installation utilised a single 100mA RCD together with MCBs to protect the installation. As a result, if the RCD operated due to an earth fault, power to all circuits throughout the property would be disconnected. In addition, two protective devices were each supplying multiple circuits, making circuit identification, fault finding, and future maintenance more difficult.
The Upgrade
The existing consumer unit was replaced with a modern FuseBox consumer unit fitted with individual 30mA RCBO protection for every circuit, together with a Type 2 Surge Protection Device (SPD).
As part of the upgrade, the circuits that had previously shared protective devices were separated onto their own dedicated RCBOs. This means every circuit now benefits from individual overcurrent and residual current protection, making future maintenance, testing, and fault finding much simpler.
One of the biggest improvements for the homeowner is that if a fault develops on a single circuit, only that individual circuit is likely to disconnect, allowing power to remain available to the rest of the property rather than losing electricity throughout the entire home.
The installation was also reorganised and clearly labelled, creating a much tidier and more accessible consumer unit. Spare ways were retained within the new consumer unit to allow for future electrical additions such as an EV charger, garden power, or other circuits without the need for another consumer unit replacement.
As part of the works, a redundant Wylex isolator that was no longer required was removed, further improving the appearance of the installation and creating additional working space around the consumer unit.

Inspection, Testing & Certification
Following completion of the consumer unit replacement, the electrical installation underwent a full inspection and testing process to verify the safety and correct operation of every circuit before being returned to service. Appropriate electrical certification was provided on completion, with the installation completed in accordance with the current edition of BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations).
Why Upgrade Your Consumer Unit?
A modern consumer unit offers significant advantages over many older installations. Individual RCBO protection helps minimise disruption by ensuring that a fault on one circuit is less likely to affect the rest of the property, while integrated surge protection provides additional protection against transient overvoltages.
Upgrading also provides a better organised electrical installation, simplifies future maintenance and fault finding, and ensures there is capacity for future electrical additions as your home’s electrical requirements change over time.
